Hella Donna is a Saxony (Germany) based pop project with a newly released feel good single attracting considerable worldwide radio play. The single was officially released May 23rd along with the accompanying (radio edit) video below.
The band had a brief hiatus in 2010 but were back together as early as Spring 2011 with Anika Karabas (successor to the former frontwoman Cindy Leißner) and her four fellow musicians Sven Hessel (Guitar), René Voigt (Bass), Lars Henrik Lincke (Keys) and Christian Scherff (Drums, Backing vocals).
The track benefits from a collaboration with U.S. indie rapper and YouTube Star None Like Joshua (NLJ) and has an inspiring uplifting feel fuelled by a catchy chorus and a pop dance/house beat.
It’s an interesting collaboration on many fronts. Both Hella Donna and NLJ have produced homages to popular video games in the past and maybe that is what brought them together?
In the case of NLJ he has dedicated songs to the iconic ‘Zelda’ and ‘Tetris’ franchises whilst Hella Donna paid tribute to ‘Minecraft‘ with their 2012 ‘Block by Block’, a bonus track to the ‘Perfect’ single racking up over 285,000 views on youtube.
Hella Donna have existed in various incarnations since their inception in 2003 and debut single ‘Hometown Radio’ in 2005. They have received extensive airplay throughout Germany and following the release of the second single ‘Not The Cure’ from their third album ‘Groove On’ they achieved a significant breakthrough.
Like Gimme Lights, Camera, Action, Not The Cure was made with the cooperation of Grammy-Award winner Philip Larsen (also remixer for Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and more) and was nominated for the “Hollywood Music in Media Awards”. It also received extensive radio coverage along with major cable TV networks MTV Music 24 and rotation on IM1.
The success of ‘Not The Cure’ led to acknowledgements at the German Rock and Pop Awards in 2012 and 2013. Hella Donna was one of the big winners. After 6 nominations in two years there were three initial placings for “Not the Cure” as “Single of the Year in 2013” and for “Groove on”: “Best Producer of 2012″ and “Best Cover 2012″.
With Gimme Lights, Camera, Action, Hella Donna look set for a Summer hit throughout Europe and maybe worldwide. The masterstroke of collaborating with NLJ should see increased exposure throughout North America and the track is pretty much on the pulse of mainstream pop at the moment.
The track comes in several flavours including a Philip Larsen Radio Edit and Club Mix. A PITCHEDsenses Club Mix and an Instrumental Dub Mix
